Viz makes food models for use in commercials, photography and displays. Chocolate cannot stand the heat of the lights; or the crowns on the available pomegranates are all broken; rape seed is out of season; cheese “sweats” under lights; grapes are too small to get a decent film image; soya leaves are not resilient enough for a slow motion shot; all reasons to have made food models in the past couple of years.
Coffee beans
We’ve made several coffee beans and coffee bean shapes.
The enlarged bean on the left was made to revolve rapidly while being hit by coffee powder for use in a the Jacqmotte high-speed shoot. (See how it was used by going to the Jacqmotte project page).
Next to this bean is a so called “aromette” for Douwe Egberts which is compressed coffee built in the shape of a coffee bean.
Chocolate “Buckshot”
The commercial for the chocolate “buckshot” starts in very close on a single, tiny piece of chocolate. This is in fact a model, made to scale at 75cm. At first we don’t know where we are, but as the camera pulls back, using the motion control rig of Alex de Heus, we realise that we have been floating around a piece of chocolate as it falls onto a piece of bread!

Guylian chocolates
For Pix & Motion We made a full set of Guylian chocolates. Jan Bultheel directed the commercial. Made by glazing directly into the negative mould so as to retain their authentic surface gloss, they are water proof and heat resistant. They are made out of polyurethane resins, cast in a silicona mould.
Pomegranate for Weleda beauty products
For Stephan Wever, working for Parasol Island we went to Berlin to recreate a pomegranate orchard. At the end of the film the girl has to pick the pomegranate. Pomegranates are usually either too big, or the crown is broken. To be on the safe side we made this model which was eventually used in the final broadcast version of the film.
